Introduction to Competency Matix
A competency matrix is a structured framework that defines what competencies are expected for each role or career level in your organization, and at what proficiency. It gives employees and managers a shared, objective reference point for what “good” looks like at every stage of a career, and what it takes to move to the next one.
Competency vs. skill
A skill is one specific ability. A competency is broader — it combines the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes needed to do a job well.
Example: public speaking is a skill. Communication is a competency — it includes public speaking, active listening, and adapting your message to the audience.
What should be in the competency Matrix?
A competency Matrix must map a specific competency against all the applicable Employee Levels in the organization

Rows typically represent competencies, columns represent levels.
This clears up way for all the employee in the organization to have clarity towards what they are working and where they should be focusing on for moving up the ladder.
Why it matters
• Sets clear expectations for each level of employees
• Shows whether someone is ready for promotion
